According to the International Lactation Consultants Association (ILCA), “An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc. (www.iblce.org) under the direction of the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLCs work in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice.”
IBCLCs undergo intensive training, including formal education, and (depending on their education and experience) must complete a pre-determined number of supervised clinical hours. After completing these requirements, potential IBCLCs are eligible to sit for the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) exam. Upon successfully passing the examination, IBCLCs are certified by IBLCE as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.

It should be noted that an IBCLC is currently the only lactation professional certified by an organization accredited by the NCCA.
