Breastfeeding Basics for Doulas (and Other Professionals) Class

An in-depth 5-hour breastfeeding basics class for doulas and other professionals. Meets the requirements for DONA certification.

Topics covered are specifically related to the doula/client relationship.  Through lecture, discussion, and activities, students will learn:

Breastfeeding Primer

  • Breast anatomy
  • Positioning and latching

Prenatal

  • Integrating breastfeeding into the birth plan
  • Encouraging parenting practices that support breastfeeding

Birth

  • Protecting breastfeeding in the birth space
  • Supporting breastfeeding after birth interventions
  • Initiating the first breastfeed

Postpartum

  • Basics of breastfeeding assessment
  • When breastfeeding doesn’t go as planned
  • Knowing how and when to refer

Beyond birth

  • Supporting pumping
  • Nursing in public
  • Breastfeeding and postpartum depression

Participants will receive materials that they may use in their practice to educate and support parents.  Participants will also be eligible to have their contact information listed on this website as a professional who has undergone basic breastfeeding education (if desired).

This class is currently offered locally in the greater Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area,
but will soon also be available in an online/distance learning format.
